Lights, Camera, Wrestling – Why Everyone Needs to Check Out the Cinematic Riptide Wrestling

RiptideWrestling_3x2_600

It’s not often I watch a pro wrestling show that changes the way I can enjoy this wonderfully strange form of entertainment, yet when I decided to check out an indie promotion’s show I’d heard some buzz about this summer, I was struck with a gorgeous, cinematic experience like no other I’d ever been exposed to before.

That promotion was Riptide Wrestling. When you’re watching a Riptide show, you can’t confuse it with any other company in the world, for the most wonderful reasons. But what exactly makes this company stand out so much, and how can you explore it for yourself? Well, I enjoy their work so much I decided to help all of the curious potential fans out there. Here is Lights, Camera, Wrestling – Why Everyone Needs to Check Out the Cinematic Riptide Wrestling.

Reasons to Start Watching Riptide

  • Pro wrestling has never been presented as a more beautiful art form than it has with Riptide Wrestling.
  • This promotion’s biggest strength becomes immediately apparent the moment you start watching any of their content. Without question, Riptide is the most beautifully shot and lit pro wrestling in the world. Each of their shows is recorded using cinema quality cameras, giving their ring an atmosphere and stunning visuals no other company can replicate.
  • Viewing a Riptide show is a unique experience thanks to their signature filming style. You don’t feel like you’re watching an independent wrestling show, you’re observing a piece of cinema, something which I believe every fan should try out.
  • Unlike most promotions, there is no commentary. However, thanks to the way their shows are recorded, every voice in the crowd is picked up clearly, placing you in that audience as if you were there. It may seem strange at first, yet hopefully you’ll grow to love it as I did.
  • With every show I’ve seen, Riptide’s crowds have been loud, responsive, respectful and full of energy, something which is captured wonderfully thanks to their lack of commentary.
  • Here are some of the talents that performed for Riptide in 2018: British Strong Style, WALTER, Toni Storm, Jimmy Havoc, Millie McKenzie, El Phantasmo, Timothy Thatcher, Aussie Open, Jinny, CCK, Mike Bailey, Kris Wolf, Travis Banks, Chris Ridgeway, Zack Sabre Jr., Anti-Fun Police, TK Cooper, Team Whitewolf, Amir Jordan, Grizzled Young Veterans, Flash Morgan Webster, Jonah Rock, and many more. If that’s not reason enough to check them out, I don’t know what is.
  • They bring together some of the best talents the UK scene has to offer (and sometimes from elsewhere also) to create some really interesting match-ups you’re unlikely to see elsewhere.
  • Slow motion, flashbacks, copyrighted music (naughty, naughty), and some beautiful effects are implemented perfectly from time to time without taking away from the action inside the ring.
  • If you are able to travel down to Brighton to see them live, Riptide shows are known for their passionate, inviting atmosphere.

Merch

  • For my personal taste, few (if any) wrestling promotions make their own merch better than Riptide Wrestling.
  • Their products are brimming with effort and detail, plus from personal experience, it’s apparent they use high quality printing and materials.
  • Riptide’s designs are elaborate, artistic, creative, and gorgeous.
  • Their range of different merchandise is hard to match, with new products being introduced to their store with every show they put on. Take a trip to their merch store and you’ll see parkas, temporary tattoos, snoods, dresses, jogger bottoms, and much more.
  • They don’t just promote themselves with their merchandise, they have a clear pride for their roster members that they utilise in their designs.
  • They even have their own craft beer!
  • You’ll probably get a couple of shiny, bright, vinyl stickers thrown in when you order from them too.

Other Cool Stuff to Note

  • Riptide is for everyone. They openly support and welcome everybody to their shows, and believe that all should be represented in pro wrestling.
  • Sometimes they use Rainbow coloured tape for their ring ropes, and it looks awesome.
  • They do not tolerate hate at their shows.
  • Riptide have huge pride for where they’re based. You’ll find Brighton mentioned in their merchandise, shows, posters, and even their championship.
  • They love cats, especially if they’re hanging around on some Riptide merch (and they’ll probably give you a 10% off code if you show them your cat).

Recommended Free Matches to Try Out

  • FREE FULL SHOW: BLACKWATER 2017 – If you want the experience of a full Riptide show, the lovely people in Brighton have uploaded an hour and forty minutes of content to watch. Matches featured are:

– Chris Brookes, Travis Banks and Jinny vs. Mike Bird, Wild Boar and Jimmy Havoc

– Flash Morgan Webster vs. Matt Cross

– Millie McKenzie vs. Omari (who’s great by the way)

– Kaggy vs. Rhia O’Reilly vs. Candyfloss vs. Charli Evans vs. Laura Di Matteo

– The Aussie Open Challenge Tag Team Match

– Zack Gibson vs. Chuck Mambo

  • Matt Riddle vs. Jimmy Havoc vs. Keith Lee – First to Two Falls Tables Match: The prospect of Jimmy Havoc mixing it up with two freak athletes now signed to NXT is fascinating enough as it is, yet throw in the unusual stipulation of having to put your opponents through two tables rather than one makes it all the more interesting.
  • Travis Banks vs. Speedball Mike Bailey: Do you like people hitting each other really hard? Well, you’ll fucking love this.
  • British Strong Style vs. Candice LeRae, Colt Cabana and Joey Ryan: What a line-up that is. Given that this match will probably never happen again considering Candice is now in NXT, it’s a requirement that you watch this gathering of amazing and diverse talent. It’s fun, it’s free, and you’ll love it.
  • Jimmy Havoc vs. Jinny: Arguably the most notable rivalry in Riptide is between Havoc and Jinny (they even made a t-shirt out of it!), who have had some of the most entertainingly brutal bouts in the company’s history. In this taster into their vicious feud, you will see a side to the NXT UK star and Mae Young Classic competitor that you’ve likely never seen as she gets extremely physical with The King of the Goths. I highly recommend you subscribe to Riptide OnDemand to see more of the magic these two create.
  • You can find more free content on their YouTube channel

OnDemand Matches You Need to Watch

  • The Riptide Rumble: If you want a good taste of what Riptide is all about, this is it right here, your first stop into your cinematic pro wrestling journey. It’s simple – it’s a rumble match, thirty entrants that enter one after the other, except you’ll have never seen a rumble match like this one. Along with Riptide’s signature look, this rumble features a whole load of ridiculousness, a few flashbacks mid-match, a fantastic variety of talent, and probably most importantly of all, Los Federales Santos Jr.
  • Ringkampf vs. Aussie Open – Brighton Championship Tournament Night 2: A legit contender for tag team match of the year. Seriously, you absolutely need to watch this match.
  • WALTER vs. Speedball Mike Bailey – International Waters: In my opinion, Mike Bailey may just be the most underappreciated wrestler in the world. Sadly, this could be down to the fact he is currently unable to compete in the United States, yet those that have seen his work in independent companies around the world can attest to how brilliant he is. His martial arts background, aerial abilities and willingness to destroy his own knees practically guarantees every match he is in to be utterly brilliant. Pair this expert striker with the best hoss wrestler on the planet today, WALTER, and you’ve definitely got something special.
  • Chris Ridgeway vs. Jack SexSmith – The Storm: There’s a lot of handsomeness going on in this match, yet the pro wrestling is downright ugly (in the best way). Stiff kick machine Chris Ridgeway punishes the lovable underdog Jack Sexsmith with a barrage of disturbingly loud shots to the body. Watch as Sexsmith tries to fight his way through this torture session with the burning hot crowd supporting him all the way.
  • Jimmy Havoc vs. Jinny – Riptide Rumble: If you go into this only having seen Jinny in NXT UK and maybe in PROGRESS as well, you will be shocked by how violent the fashionista becomes in this. This truly is a hardcore brawl, filled with tables, chair shots, thumbtacks, the lot. Nobody will mess with Jinny on the catwalk after seeing this one (also Jimmy Havoc is really, really good as always).
  • Dave Benson Phillips and Session Moth Martina vs. Anti-Fun Police – Brighton Championship Tournament Night 2: Yes, the Dave Benson Phillips. If you’re from the UK and of a certain age, this match will make you smile uncontrollably from start to finish. He was a legend already for helping kids get their own back and gunging a load of embarrassing relatives, but for doing this match in 2018 as well, he deserves a knighthood.
  • David Starr vs. Chuck Mambo – Brighton Spirit Night 1: David Starr is a lifeguard in this match, little orange shorts and all, and it is fucking hilarious. Who knew that beach balls, pro wrestling and slow motion BayWatch running all went together so well?
  • El Phantasmo vs. Omari vs. Bea Priestly – The Storm: El Phantasmo – one of the best performers on the UK indies today, and in my opinion, one of the smoothest high flyers in the world. Bea Priestly – somebody who has improved vastly over the last couple of years, developing a great style, look and one hell of a finisher. Omari – a promising talent that’s turned heads and gotten people talking in the last two years. Put them all together and you get a frantic, fast burst of a bout that makes for quick, entertaining viewing.
  • WALTER vs. Jonah Rock – Brighton Championship Tournament Night 1: The definition of a big lad scrap. The two biggest members of Riptide’s roster collide in one hell of an encounter.
  • Jordan Devlin vs. Chuck Mambo – Brighton Championship Tournament Night 2: Want further proof of just how good Jordan Devlin is? Check out this match.

wXw NOW

  • As of December 1st 2018, Riptide is now a part of the wXw NOW Network, a streaming service that brings thirteen different promotions from across Europe in place. Going forward, I imagine more of Riptide’s content will be available on their own OnDemand service, and will most likely be uploaded there first, yet if already have wXw NOW or have been thinking of subscribing to it, do not look over the content Riptide are offering you.
